Migration of surface-related multiples: tests on the Sigsbee2B dataset

چکیده
We present a theory to generate pseudo-primary shot gathers from multiple and primary reflections by performing a surface-consistent cross-correlation. The estimated pseudoprimaries exhibit the same kinematics as the original dataset with few transformation artifacts. We demonstrate that pseudo-primaries can accurately estimate missing traces as long as the gaps are within the acquisition spread. Pseudo-primaries can also help to extrapolate the data outside the acquisition spread. The image obtained by migrating the pseudo-primary gathers shows that multiple migration can provide valuable information under complex geology.

Water-bottom and diffracted 2D multiple reflections in data space and image space
Water-bottom multiples from a dipping interface have the same kinematics in a Common Midpoint (CMP) gather as a primary from a reflector with twice the dip at twice the perpendicular depth at the CMP location. When migrated with the velocity of the primaries, these multiples are overmigrated just as primaries migrated with higher velocity, and their moveout is thus predictable in image space. D...
متن کاملAttenuation of 2D specularly-reflected multiples in image space
I propose a new method to attenuate specularly-reflected multiples in the image space. The method is based on the difference in mapping between primaries and multiples in Subsurface Offset Domain Common Image Gathers (SODCIGs). I migrate the data with a velocity slower than that of the primaries but faster than that of the multiples. The primaries are therefore undermigrated whereas the multipl...
متن کاملSource-receiver migration of multiple reflections
Multiple reflections are usually considered to be noise and many methods have been developed to attenuate them. However, similarly to primary reflections, multiple reflections are created by subsurface reflectors and contain their reflectivity information. We can image surface related multiples, regarding the corresponding primaries as the sources. Traditional source-receiver migration assumes ...
متن کاملInterpolation with Prediction-error Filters and Training Data a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Geophysics and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
With finite capital and logistical means, interpolation is a necessary part of seismic processing, especially for such data-dependent methods as surface-related multiple elimination. One such method is to first estimate a prediction-error filter (PEF) on a training data set, and then use that PEF to estimate missing data, where each step is a least-squares problem. This approach is useful becau...
متن کاملPOIC-Radon Filtering of Near-offset Multiples
The primary only imaging condition (POIC) can effectively remove some of the migration artifacts generated by multiple energy in the far-offset data. The multiples predicted by a POIC filter in the far-offset data are used to predict and eliminate the near-offset multiples in the τ−p domain with the Radon transform. The hybrid algorithm is tested on a simple synthetic example and the 2-D SMAART...
